The Holy Bible.

Pictured to the left is a copy of a version of the Holy Bible, known as the ENGLISH STANDARD VERSION ( ESV ).  John 17:1-5 read as follows:
"When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, 'Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.  3 And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.  4 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.  5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.'"
The answer to at least one significant question is found in the above-given passage from the Holy Bible.
What is the purpose of eternal life?  Jesus has answered this question for us in verses two and three ( above ), namely, that all those whom the heavenly Father has given to Jesus know Him ( the only true God ) and Jesus Christ whom He sent.  If we are not willing to know the heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ while on this earth, through studying the Holy Bible ( which is God's word - see Psalm 92:5; 111:2; 119:65-73, 142, 151, John 1:1, 14; 10:30; 14:6; 17:1, 3, 17, Romans 1:20 ( see Romans 1:20 ( KJV, for example; with center-column references, for example ) to get the equivalent translation for the word "Godhead" ), Colossians 2:8, 9 ( KJV, for example ), 2 Timothy 2:15; 3:16, 17, Titus 1:1, 2, and 1 John 5:6-8 ( KJV, for example ), for example ) and living for Christ ( see Luke 8:21; 11:28, John 7:16, 2 Corinthians 5:14, 15 ( especially verse 15, for example ), and Revelation 1:3, for example ), then we should not expect to find ourselves in heaven: the purpose of eternal life is to spend eternity in heaven knowing the heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ.  See also Matthew 10:32; 11:15, Mark 16:16, Luke 13:3, Acts 2:38; 4:1-12 ( especially verses 10-12, for example ); 8:26-40 ( especially verses 36-39, for example; KJV, for example ), and Revelation 2:10, for example.
